First Kiss, Mommy, and Pretend Play

Today at My Gym, a little boy named Gabriel kissed Leah on the mouth! He just grabbed her and kissed her, and then he did it again and again. Leah took it very well. Another baby would have pushed him or started crying, but Leah knows that kissing is a sweet thing. Awww, my baby had her first kiss at 15 months old. Dada better watch out!

Leah started saying mommy last week. No more mama... I know she's still a little girl and it's very cute the way she says mommy, but it makes me a little sad because it means she's growing up!

We have been reading The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. It's a beautifully illustrated book, and Leah loves looking at the pictures. The story is about a man who walks into the rain forest and thinks about cutting down a tree. She started saying man because of the book.

Leah has been doing a lot of imaginative play. She will pick up a spoon and pretend to eat from it, or she'll feed her baby dolls. The other day, she got her blanket and bear pillow and pretended to sleep, but kept looking up and smiling at me at the same time. I read that as soon as children begin to use language, they also have the ability to pretend. A 15 month old's pretend play at this stage mirrors real behavior. It's not until later that they can pick up a stick and pretend it's an airplane. Leah's been pretend playing for a while now (feeding, patting, and changing the diaper of her baby dolls). Is this evidence of her intelligence? I hope I'm able to nurture it.
